Investment in Intelligence and Autonomy team furthers leading-edge technology at OpenWorks

A new Intelligence and Autonomy team at OpenWorks has seen computer vision expert, Dr Oliver Hamilton, join the company from household name, Intel, to drive the development of leading-edge autonomous optics for security and defence applications.

Oliver has developed a widely recognised reputation for solving complex vision problems in a range of industries, including deploying the latest technologies to enhance even the most everyday use-cases. A personal project intent on perfecting the tracking and identification of birds lent itself well to a cross-over with OpenWorks’ focus on dynamic aerial targets.

His appointment to the company’s newly formed senior management team as Head of Intelligence and Autonomy underlines OpenWorks’ commitment to furthering its position as a technology leader in the C-UAS, Air Defence and Dynamic Threat Defeat sector. His team includes Dr Brian Isaac-Medina who specialises in AI detection models and 3D reconstruction. Brian was recently ranked in the top 3% of research reviewers at the 2025 International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV). The team will join one of OpenWorks’ founders, Alex Wilkinson, in developing the fastest and most robust vision models to support OpenWorks’ product portfolio.

Strengthening links with academia is a central part of the team’s remit, ensuring that the latest research is considered and integrated in OpenWorks’ future developments. The emphasis on collaboration with local universities will see high quality roles created, and career pathways developed that keep world-class talent in the North East of England and focused on challenges that are of increasing importance to NATO members and its allies.

“Investment in our Intelligence and Autonomy team demonstrates our commitment to developing world-leading technology in the field of vision autonomous optics that protects civilians and provides intelligence and tactical agility to defence and security forces.” – Chris Down, Chief Executive Officer at OpenWorks Engineering.

“Advances in AI are happening at an unprecedented pace; the real challenge is translating them into systems that are both fast and reliable under extreme conditions. At OpenWorks, we’re training AI models that don’t just perform in the lab, they’re engineered to deliver consistent results in the field, where resilience and precision are mission critical” – Oliver Hamilton, Head of Intelligence and Autonomy.
