Running The Extra Mile: OpenWorks Team Take on The Great North Run

The OpenWorks team took to the North East’s roads for the annual AJ Bell Great North Run, supporting charities close to their hearts while also taking on their own personal fitness goals.

The AJ Bell Great North Run marked its 45th year on Sunday 13th September 2026, with 63,000 participants taking part in the world’s largest half marathon. Beginning in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne and ending along the coast in South Shields, the iconic event attracts runners from across the UK and around the world, all coming together to enjoy the scenic route, incredible atmosphere and fantastic support from spectators lining the course.

For our team, everyone had their own reason for taking part, from raising money and awareness for charities that are close to their hearts, to challenging themselves and working towards personal fitness goals. The months of training and preparation leading up to the event, along with stepping outside of their comfort zones, certainly paid off, with everyone doing exceptionally well.

Take a look at some of the fantastic images captured on the day, along with quotes from our team who took part and shared their experiences of this year’s Great North Run.

“I ran the Great North Run for the APlastic Anemia Trust on behalf on my little boy who was diagnosed last June. This very rare blood disorder affects about 40 children under the age of 16 in the UK per year, it effectively turns off your blood factory. The bone marrow is then unable to create the necessary cells. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant. This is the only UK charity dedicated to it, so the fancy dress costumes were essential for raising awareness. It was a fantastic day and I’m really looking forward to next year!”

“I’m proud to have ran on behalf of Alzheimer’s UK raising money for an excellent cause. I also achieved my personal best of a sub 01:50:00 (HH:MM:SS) goal with 01:47:27”

Jake, Production Manager

“I’ve run the Great North Run for several charities in the past, but this year I ran just for fun. It’s such an integral part of the North East’s identity and something that makes me incredibly proud to be from the region. There really is no other event quite like it!”
